Our Science Week started with a very interesting, fun-filled assembly led by our visiting scientist. He demonstrated the movement and power of air by involving us in some intriguing experiments with unexpected and exciting results! We particularly enjoyed the beach ball staying in the air and the toilet roll flying over us. 

In our class workshops called ‘Colour, Lights, Action’ we started by learning about ‘diffraction’ by wearing some diffraction glasses. We were amazed to see rainbow colours! The glasses had a special lens which diffracted light into its component colours so as we looked around the room we could see many rainbows. 

Next we used a torch and shone it onto the corner of a prism to make a rainbow appear inside. Again the light was being diffracted. We also looked inside some small periscopes and saw a multitude of rainbow patterns. 

For our experiment, we used a pipette to drip water on a circle of Skittles so that gradually the colour washed off them. We discovered that the red sweets had the strongest pigment. 

In the classroom we continued learning about colours and pigments by growing a rainbow. We coloured patches of the rainbow colours near the ends of our paper arches, and when we dipped the ends into water, the colours appeared to grow as they moved up the absorbent paper! We also drew on coffee filter paper and then dripped water onto our felt tip pictures and pattern. We watched the pigments spread out on the paper.  

We had a great time being scientists and have been fascinated by what we discovered.
