The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Under the Equality Act, there are none Protected Characteristics that everyone in Britain is protected from discrimination. At Leighton, we are committed to anti-discriminatory practice to promote equality of opportunity and valuing diversity for all children and families. • Our school vision and ethos statements and the development plan.

• Our policies for the management of behaviour at Leighton Primary School.

• Conscious role modelling by all adults in the school community.

• Active engagement and communication with parents and carers, embracing strategy and embracing our diverse community.

• Providing workshops/ cafes e.g. Phonics, Multiplication, Reading, Internet Safety  etc for all parents and carers.

• Leighton upholds and teaches children about the school’s values as part of our curriculum and our programme of assemblies.

• Promoting mutual respect and understanding through our religious education and PSHE curriculum.

• Learning about significant people who represent the protected characteristics and challenging stereotyping and discrimination is embedded within our history curriculum.

• Developing a love of reading and books through the Reading Pledge. Children are introduced to different genres and authors.

• Junior Leadership team: these children develop an understanding of democracy and the voting system. They understand their views and opinions are listened to and point of view considered.

Equality Objectives

At Leighton Primary School, we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers, irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief, religion or socio-economic background.

In order to further support pupils, raise standards and ensure inclusive teaching, we have set the following objectives:

Objective 1: To monitor and analyse pupil achievement by race, gender and disability and act on any trends or patterns in the data that require additional support for pupils.

 Objective 2: To raise levels of attainment in core subjects for vulnerable learners.

Objective 3: To review levels of parental and pupil engagement in learning and school life, across all activities to ensure equity and fairness in access and engagement.
